One Person Can Make a Change - Show #16

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. That way you'll never miss a word! Thanks for visiting!

If you dislike something at your school, such as the fundraising programs or certain school policies, why not speak up and make a positive change! If you believe in a cause, then your enthusiasm will be contagious to others.

My guest this week did just that and is making a positive impact on her kids’ school. Christine Lane is a personal trainer and mother of two in CA who has created The Student Body Campaign at her school. This campaign will launch next September and is a way to encourage the kids and their families to live a healthier lifestyle but to also encourage schools across the country that their fundraising efforts can be healthy and do not need to depend upon all the high fat, high calorie snacks that are often found in fundraising catalogs.

Christine has lots of tips if you want to start your own healthy fundraiser and ways that her idea can be turned into a learning experience rather than a fundraiser. If you have any ideas for Christine or would be interested in sponsoring part of her event, you can reach her at christine@thestudentbodycampaign.com

Please don’t forget about www.CrittersWhoCare.com If you visit their website, Annette Yen has some really touching stories about how a simple stuffed animal has affected some of these troubled children. This is an on-going cause and there are many, very affordable levels of sponsorship.

Staying Safe with Food Allergies - Show #15

Food allergies in children are on the rise and there is no definitive proof as to why this is happening. If you are the parent of a child with food allergies, you need to take extra precautions to insure that your child is safe at school and that the school personnel know how to handle a possibly life-threatening reaction.

My guest this week is Maria Acebal, the founder of www.foodallergysmart.org and she shares with us how dangerous food allergies can be and what steps should be taken to keep children with food allergies safe at school.

Maria has a wealth of information to share, such as what is anaphylaxis, why it is so important to wash hands AFTER eating at school, when will an allergic reaction occur and also what teachers can do to keep their own classrooms safe. Find out what precautions parents should take when inviting a food allergic child for a playdate and what kind of birthday goodies are best to share with the class.

The teaching program that Maria brings to schools is called Safe@School Partners and she teaches the entire school staff about food allergy safety. If you would like to view the documentary Maria mentioned about Sabrina Shannon who died from anaphylaxis due to cross-contamination of food, here is the link.

Also mentioned on the show was www.CrittersWhoCare.com where you can help to send stuffed animals to children whose parents are receiving hospice care or to children who are receiving hospice care themselves. If you would like to enter a contest for helping to spread the word, check out www.MomsLoveShopping.com.

If you are a mom who loves to write, the deadline for the Moms Telling Stories competition is coming up quickly! Find rules for submissions here at www.MomsTalkRadio.com .
