Thursday, October 11th is the big day when an Oregon woman takes the school district in which she teaches to court in an effort to change the policy barring handguns in her school.

Shirley Katz is the teacher who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon to protect herself against alleged threats from her ex-husband. She feels this protection should be allowed to her in the school building and wants the policy changed.

She also feels that if faculty and staff were armed, the chance of another tragedy like Columbine would be thwarted because the staff could then take action against the perpetrators rather than hiding defenselessly behind locked doors.

It’s an interesting debate because the ex-husband denies the threats and, according to the USA Today article, has even called the school to tell them he has no intention of harming anyone or causing trouble at the school.
