Sick of Dirty Politicians

I am honestly and truly sick of hearing about the scandals that politicians seem to embroil themselves in. Do they honestly think they are so “high and mighty” that they are above the law? Do they not realize that by being in the public eye they are examples and possibly role models to our youth?
If you haven’t heard, our “distinguished” governor of New York has been accused of paying for the services of a high-priced “escort” and the front page of the newspaper is emblazoned with the headline, “SCANDAL”. I am a believer that no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes but come on…this particular act is illegal everywhere in this country except Nevada…that’s no mistake.
My bigger complaint is that now I must explain the “P-word” to my 5th grader. This is not a word that a 10-year-old should know the definition of and yet I feel that I am backed into a corner because her class reads the newspaper at school. It’s one thing to hide it at home but they have copies at school. I’m also sure that many of her classmates, whose parents do not seem to be as protective as we are, will be talking about it.
I am all for encouraging our children to perform public service of some sort and ideally, politicians who enter into the public service arena should have a great desire to help our country, state, or town. But more and more we are hearing about these scandals (Connecticut and New Jersey had their own governor scandals not that long ago) so what is it about politicians? Are there seriously NO honest politicians in the country?
With any luck at all, we parents can teach our children that because our governor did something illegal, he will lose his career, possibly lose his family, and hopefully end up in jail.
That’s the example I want my kids to see…and that is the pitiful legacy of a greedy and unethical politician.

AMEN!!! I hate that my 8yo and I can’t watch the stinkin NEWS without me having to explain something dirty to him!
I know that everyone is human but good GAWD you are a public figure.. get it together!
I take the same approach: its illegal, wrong and against what should be done and they will have to repay their family and society. (ugh)
Ditto to what both you and Aurelia said. It’s shameful and helps promote the mentality that breaking the law is no big deal.
First, they are desensitized by hearing about things they shouldn’t at such a young age, then they generally see the public figure get his hand slapped or simply disappear after a meaningless apology. No consequences.
