Happy New Year everyone!

Every adult in the free world knows that the New Year is our traditional time to set our resolutions for the upcoming year. We make outlandish promises to ourselves and often feel defeated or give up by mid-January because we haven’t yet learned how to set realistic goals.

This week your host Christina Lemmey shares some ways that you can help your children set realistic goals and form good work habits in order to reach those goals. This is the basis for developing a good work ethic which will only benefit them as they grow older.

To motivate your children to work towards their goals you will need to have some house rules regarding television viewing and video game playing (or whatever it is your child would rather be doing.) TV tickets worked well in our house during the summer. This simply means that once their work was completed, the kids were allowed a certain amount of television viewing time to use at their discretion. Once they used up their “tickets”, no more tv.

Children often like to be rewarded when they reach a goal but those rewards do not have to break the bank, especially if you’re rewarding a child who is 5 every week. You can use a simple sticker chart to mark the days your child has worked toward his/her goal or you can use simple items from the dollar store.

great podcast, I’ve linked this page to my site! More parents need to take a disciplined proactive role in having children set goals, rather than hoping this value will just develop naturally.
